JPG Mag is one of the few so far examples of successful projects that produce a product by its own consumers. And certainly one of the units that could apply this model to the publication of a printed edition.
An excited audience today often has an opinion that between the Internet, as a source of information, and traditional paper media, there is a fierce struggle not for life, but for death and, as they say, “there must be only one”. However, as it always happens, there are people who manage to combine seemingly opposite things, taking from them all the best. Such people a couple of years ago were the spouses Derek and Heather Powazek (
Derek Powazek ,
Heather Powazek-Champ ).
The magazine founded by them is not issued in millions of copies, is printed on mediocre paper made from dead trees, and its motto - “Journal of bold new photography” - generally does not cause shine in the eyes of people who do not suffer from excessive impressionability. But very few people remain indifferent when they find out where this edition comes from. And it takes them 100% from its
site , where a dedicated community of readers (and at the same time authors) of the magazine daily (almost every minute, in fact) places its best photographs that form the basis of the magazine, as well as articles on photo equipment and the art of photographing.
')
The scheme here is as simple as mooing: a person (no matter whether he is an amateur or a professional) uploads frames to the
site that he considers worthy of publication, and places it in a particular
topic ; if the topic is selected for printing in the next issue, all photographs related to it are subject to nation-wide voting and several of the best are selected from them, which go to the journal; The editorial board reserves the function of the layout of the number and chooses which photo gets on the cover. After the magazine was released for sale (the last issue had a circulation of 20,000 copies), the authors of all
published works receive $ 100 (by US standards, this is rather a symbolic amount) and an annual subscription to the publication.
The magazine is published once in two months and on December 8 the voting for photos for the next issue ends. It will include photos about
tourism and travel ,
intimate moments of life and
frozen moments . The themes of the previous ones were, for example, “Self-portrait”, “Oops!”, “Incredible” and others.
If you feel sympathy for such a little anarchic enterprises and think that social networking is too weightless matter, then why not participate? Perhaps this is exactly what you can tell your grandchildren.
