After government agencies blocked Google’s deal to buy “Runner,” rumors emerged that this was done with the knowledge of the highest officials, the level of deputy prime minister and president. There was information that Putin personally expressed dissatisfaction with this deal.
Some people did not believe that such wildness is possible in Russia. That a private Internet company like Yandex will defend itself against competitors by appealing to the country's president — it was hard to even imagine. But today it became clear that this is quite possible.
Today in the Vedomosti newspaper an interview with Yandex’s owner Arkady Volozh is printed, where he, in fact, admits to such a business practice (although he denies influence on the deal with Runner). Here is a direct quote from there: ')
In terms of controlling property ownership, the Internet can be compared to any other infrastructure in the country — for example, roads, a telephone, or a TV.For any state, this is all a strategic value. It is important that in critical situations this is not in the “wrong hands” and was not used against the people and the state ... I consider Yandex a strategic company ... The largest Internet companies (not the entire Internet, but the largest resources) should be transparent, and round trip. The state should understand who controls the company, to whom it belongs and who makes decisions in it. I wonder what other Internet companies in Russia can be considered strategic? Mail.ru? "Classmates"? Mambu?
