Computer simulations to test cyber attack readiness

image It was a great day for cricket, but the US National Security Secretary, Michael Chertoff (Michael Chertoff, last syllable) insisted on playing the global information war. And the result of a two-day simulation, according to the official participants, is in one simple conclusion: in order to win, you need to “play” more.

The fact is that last Wednesday and Thursday, the US government conducted a fairly serious campaign to test the safety of vital for the country networks connected to the Internet, such as transport, banking, health, etc. In Washington, Ronald Reagan building, 230 top representatives Governments, the private sector and large corporations took part in perhaps the biggest attack on the country's information structures. Booz Allen Hamilton, together with the Business Executives for National Security, consulted them in this matter.

All participants were divided into 4 groups: government officials, private business team, civil society team and mixed, control, group. This was done in order to understand the impact on which area of the community will be the most painful or, at most, critical.

On the side of the state were representatives of the Ministry of Defense, someone from intelligence and other state structures. In a private business team: telecoms, IT companies and various financial services, as well as energy producers, as well as representatives of the transport sector.

Naturally, practically nothing is reported about the course of the “game” itself, since the most probable (real) scenarios of the development of events, which outsiders should not be aware of, were worked through. But the result, however, turned out to be quite expected: “Now in the country, in fact, no one is responsible if any of the beaten scenarios actually happen. We are one step behind where we should be today. ” Chertof himself emphasizes that cyber attacks, similar to recent ones on Estonian networks, will only become more serious and terrible in the future, so be prepared for such situations better now. Among other things, the need for close cooperation with ordinary citizens is noted: “The Internet is not a place where everyone can be commanded and controlled, but an area where cooperation and cooperation will give the best results.”
