J'son & Partners (J & P) analysts predict that by the end of 2008 there will be more than 13,000 public access points in Russia. Now, according to them, the market is gaining momentum in all technological areas, be it public local hotspots or metrozones for home and mobile broadband access.
According to a recent J & P study, completed in November 2006, the number of public hot spots in Russia will exceed 7,000 by the end of 2006, with the “points” of the Golden Telecom Wi-Fi project being the most. The number of corporate wireless networks at the end of the year will be more than 500.
At the same time all over the world by the end of 2006 there will be about 150 thousand hot spots. And in the global context, the Russian Wi-Fi market demonstrates “explosive growth” - over the year it has increased from 650 to 7,187 access points, that is, 11 times. Such impressive indicators of the market is obliged to citywide networks - metrozones, which are deployed in several cities of the country. According to the forecasts of researchers, in 2007 the number of hot spots will increase to 9,403, and in 2008 - to 13,055.

At the same time, J & P stresses that a well-defined strategy and business model for the commercial success of public Wi-Fi is always more important than the number of access points. Researchers point out that the share of free hot spots in the industry has increased by 7% over the year (from 32% to 39%), but in the near future it will decrease due to the development of large metrozones. Within the framework of the paid model, the megabyte payment for traffic is 43%, but it is steadily decreasing.
In terms of services, J & P predicts that in 2008, 80% of the world's hot spots will provide VoIP, either as access to a global service provider, or as their own service. Roaming agreements with hot spot aggregators will be considered as an additional source of income and increase in profits by Wi-Fi providers.
