Those who are not aware of the performance of Windows 7 can sleep at night can finally breathe easy - the
ZDNet hardware blogger
tested the pre-beta build of Windows 7 (build 6956) and compared the results with similar tests like Vista RTM 32-bit and Windows Vista SP1 32-bit.
Characteristics of the PC on which performance tests were conducted:
- Phenom 9700 quad-core processor
- ATI Radeon 3850 graphics card with 256MB RAM
- ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe motherboard
- 2GB (2 x 1GB) Corsair Dominator CM2X1024-8500C5D RAM
- Western Digital Raptor 10,000RPM 150GB primary hard drive
- Western Digital Caviar 7,200RPM 500GB secondary hard drive
The test results are under the cut, but I will present the first dish to you myself - in 3 out of 4 tests, the non-optimized pre-beta version of Windows 7 outperforms Vista (with all the updates) in performance.
Adrian Kingsley-Hughes (who conducted the tests), however, notes that all tests and benchmarks, one way or another, do not always reflect the real state of affairs. When Microsoft's new OS appears in a ready, assembled / tested / optimized form, it will surely surpass the results of Windows Vista in all types of tests, including rendering, which is still a bit lagging behind.
