Companies are transferring press conferences to the virtual world.

Holding press conferences in the world of Second Life has become a fashionable phenomenon among advanced companies, especially in the field of IT.

The fact is that “Second Life” is a truly unique game. The prototype for its creation was Neal Stevenson ’s classic Abervaline cyberpunk “Avalanche” (1992; translated into Russian in 2003), whose characters very successfully combined life in the real and online worlds. Among the residents of Second Life there are directors of many companies , major financiers and businessmen from the real world, including from Russia . Naturally, hundreds of journalists roam in the SL world. Therefore, conducting business presentations and press conferences here is very productive and fully justified.

A week ago, Sun announced the sensational news of publishing Java source code under an open source license . It is symbolic that the press conference was organized at the Sun office in the world of SL .

Almost at the same time as Sun, a press conference in SL was held by Dell , and it organized a closed event for specially invited journalists (they checked passes at the entrance). The theme of the press conference was that Dell bought out an entire island in the virtual world on which it placed a store selling personal computers. Each user can go there, select the desired configuration and buy a virtual PC for virtual currency or its exact offline copy for US dollars.

However, press conferences are held not only in Second Life, but also in other virtual worlds. For example, on December 1, the company Socialtext has appointed a press conference in the world of World of Warcraft .

One way or another, but the holding of such events is an obvious trend in our days. First, the company gets the opportunity to save on renting space. Secondly, you can invite participants from other cities and even countries to the event. Thirdly, it is more convenient in the virtual world than in the offline to show presentations and demos to journalists. Fourth, virtual press conferences are unusual. In Russia, this has not happened yet, and if some company decides to hold such an event, it will immediately fall into the headlines, that is, for her, this is also an additional PR effect.

In the west, this is no surprise to anyone. The largest companies, including Nike and General Motors , have their branches in SL, and IBM has even allocated $ 10 million to explore the virtual worlds as a tool for corporate communications. Perhaps it is there that new models of electronics and home appliances will appear, new marketing techniques and advertising campaigns will be tested.

Thus, the virtual world can become an advanced frontier of human civilization, interesting and full of events. Corporations will transfer only a few proven ideas and products to offline. Offline will become, in a sense, a secondary world, a faded copy of virtuality.
