The expansion of the blogosphere and the emergence of social media has not gone unnoticed by spammers. They immediately appreciated the possibilities of simple content generation, buying links and promoting spam resources in search engines and other aggregation systems.
The blogosphere was hit first: a huge amount of garbage appeared there. For example, according to statistics from the Automattic Kismet service,
about 93% of all blog comments are created by spammers . On sites with high ratings, spammers create doorway pages that are spun through spamming blogs. The goal is to raise the doorway in search results as high as possible and redirect users to the main site, which makes a profit from contextual advertising (the
scheme ).
Now the same attack got to the social media, where
several spam cases were recently noticed.
For example, a week ago a note on
weight loss recipes for computer scientists rose to the top five most popular news on the first page of
Digg . The note is really interesting and sensible, if not for one “but”: the
target text is located on the site
i-dentalresources.com , which is clearly explicitly optimized for search queries in dentistry. That is, the site owners specifically placed in such material to get a high rating link from Digg. In fact, they
turned Digg into doorway .
')
Incidentally, the owner of the dental site (or his accomplice) posted a link to this text in other social media. The same newcomer user
pindarev published this link
to Newsvine , as well as
to Reddit and
del.icio.us.A small investigation revealed that the domain with a blog about dentistry is registered to a certain
citizen of Bangladesh , who, moreover, uses the services of
eBizzSol . This service specializes in SEO optimization, including the provision of automatic content generation services. Their interest in the topic of dentistry is not at all surprising, considering that these are almost the most expensive links in
Google AdSense contextual advertising systems. For example, advertisers pay more than $ 18 for one click on the “teeth whitening” link.
What will happen next?It can be assumed that accounts with high reputation (karma) in social media will soon become an object of sale, as it has long been happening, for example in
World of Warcraft and other multiplayer online games, where character trading has become massive. Even at an
eBay auction
, you can find a suitable account, and game developers cannot do anything about it.
If social media cannot resist spam, this can lead to their being penalized in search results or excluded from the indexes of the largest search engines.
