Some time ago I published a
poll with the topic “Who uses what.” It was about operating systems. Since now new comments and responses have practically ceased to arrive, it can be concluded that the results have more or less stabilized. Immediately make several statements:
This poll ...
- ... does not give accurate data, "from under what" go to Habr. Such data can be obtained from the blog Habrachelovek Shoohurt
- ... does not provide a comprehensive definition of exactly what types of Linux are used by Habras
- ... can not be absolutely accurate - for example, I am sure that many users of alternative Linux, chose the item "Other Linux" but did not comment - I took the courage to approximate the share of users of a distribution set specified in the comments and calculate the approximate objective values of popularity of one or another distribution kit.
- ... finally, according to the results of the survey, it is easy to notice that, having summed up all the results, we won’t get the total number of users - which is not strange, since users could specify several operating systems that they use at different times
So what does this survey, a thousand devils, show?
And he shows, in actual fact, the approximate distribution of preferences of socially active users of Habr. No, I do not want to say anything - but you must agree - quite a few people voted for this or that Linux, even if it costs them a second operating system and is used once a month. But they are interested. It is important.
So slides!

Well, strictly speaking, I do not see anything surprising. Windows comes first. In second place - with a very large share - Linux, which is again quite predictable, given the general geek-technical orientation of the resource.
System | % Share |
Windows | 56.72 |
Linux | 31.08 |
Mac | 10.13 |
BSD | 2.07 |
Poppy in third place. Someone will be surprised, because thanks to Umputun and Bobuk, the associates already seem to believe that Mac is the very system, Holi, you can say, the Grail of a true geek - but let's be objective: Mac is expensive. At the same time, the geek at the time of reaching that level of material well-being, when he can buy a Mac without straining himself, often completely falls into nirvana and he doesn’t care much about what to use, if it’s something - not Windows (this is where Linux).
This is comparable and comparable with the data of
Shoohurt - Linux and Mac are also in second and third places respectively, but the shares differ significantly. How this is explained is difficult to say, but my guess is precisely because this survey shows user preferences, not real numbers.

Personally for me, the wild popularity of Gentoo was a revelation. Honestly, I don’t even know how to comment on it - but it’s clear that geeks live exactly there (but keep in mind that the nty share is approximated from the number of comments in its favor and the total number of votes for Other Linux, so the discrepancies with reality can be up to 10-15%).
With Ubuntu, everything is clear - the most friendly distro remains and, as a result, a confident victory in the Linux contest, with a margin of more than 50% from the nearest competitor. That is, we can say with certainty - there is Ubuntu, and there are all the rest.
Distributive | % Share |
Ubuntu | 63.7 |
Gentoo | 7.41 |
OpenSUSE | 6.67 |
Debian | 6.67 |
Fedora | 5.43 |
Mandriva | 4.44 |
Arch | 3.7 |
Slackware | 1.23 |
Rhel | 0.74 |
In general, I personally like the trend very much - people know about alternative systems, people use them, and the community of Habr in this matter, as usual, is ahead of the rest! Many thanks to all who answered - and look forward to your comments and alternative conclusions. Why? How? Is it good or bad? Is Ubuntu evil or good? - let's discuss! :-)
