MIA: pirates increased $ 94 million from the legal market

If not for the pirate brethren, domestic rightholders could receive in 2006 about $ 94 million more (2.48 billion rubles). The Department of Economic Security of the Ministry of Internal Affairs speaks about these annoying losses, voicing the volume of current damages in the field of intellectual property. As indicated in the report of the department, 6,432 criminal cases were initiated on the fact of violation of copyright and related rights for 10 months of this year, which is twice as many as last year. Criminal liability in this regard befell 3082 people.

The news about the seizure of four 20-ton containers filled with counterfeit DVDs by the Volga police seems a good illustration of the state of things in Russia. In the course of the case, they managed to reach a 30-year-old resident of Nizhny Novgorod, who lived on the income from a network of retail outlets selling pirated products. These points were located both in the Lower and outside of it, bringing the detainee up to $ 15 thousand in profits monthly. The wholesale warehouse of products "businessman" kept at home.

According to Interfax , the activities of another four major suppliers of illegal audiovisual products, which occupied sales markets in Kazan, Tver, Penza and Moscow with the region, have recently been suppressed. At that, about 1 million counterfeit units on optical data carriers were seized, as well as 280 matrices intended for software manufacturing.

But despite the impressive $ 94 million "intellectual" loss, experts believe that the figure, multiplied by three, is closer to reality. According to Vedomosti , Alexander Menn, chairman of the board of directors of the Soyuz concern, says that the Interior Ministry assesses the damage based on the cost of pirated discs, and the price of legal products will never compare with pirated ones. But even without taking into account this amendment, the amount of damage that the police managed to prevent turned out to be almost two orders of magnitude less than the total losses - only 40.5 million rubles (slightly more than $ 1.5 million).

In addition, according to Menn, who cites the example of a videocontrac- tion, the price of unsold movie tickets should also be recorded in the loss of rights holders, since pirates are beginning to sell films during the premiere screenings in cinemas.
