At the end of October, 1003 residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg each had 153 and 136 SIM-cards, respectively, according to the consulting agency
Advanced Communications & Media (AC & M). The number of subscribers of Russian cellular operators increased by 0.6% to 148 million people last month, and the level of cellular penetration was 102%, adding 1%.
In this regard, experts point out that this is not the most favorable time for mobile industry players - the market is saturated, and campaigns to attract subscribers turn into an outflow. “Operators are now connecting so few new subscribers that any of them may face the loss of customers,” transmit AC & M analyst Anton Pogrebinsky to
Vedomosti .
Last October, one of the operators did encounter such losses:
VimpelCom lost more subscribers in a month than it attracted - in Russia their number decreased by almost 370,000. The player’s subscriber base increased only due to the CIS countries - Ukraine and Kazakhstan .

“The technical outflow of inactive subscribers was significantly higher than the usual level,” the press service of VimpelCom confirms, pointing out three reasons that led to this. First of all, those who changed numbers were retired to the outflow, but remained the operator’s subscriber, switching to a new tariff. Secondly, Mobile Vampires who subscribed at the tariff turned out to be written off, since the action was curtailed several months after launch. Thirdly, the operator increased the cost of its basic set (up to 200 rubles), and this led to some decrease in the level of sales.
MTS affairs, according to the indicators of the month, were a little better - the company managed to attract 227,000 subscribers in Russia and 713,000 beyond its borders, reports AC & M. And the leader for the month was
Megafon , which connected almost 520,000 subscribers, which explains the success of the service, which allows the client to model tariffs on their own. At the same time, we recall, MTS serves 34% of subscribers, VimpelCom - 32%, and Megafon - 19.3%.
