Sonata - a new generation of lithium-ion batteries
From the beginning of 2009, HP will start installing new generation batteries in laptops, the Sonata. A distinctive feature of new batteries - the ability to withstand more than a thousand charge cycles - is almost seven times more than modern lithium-ion batteries.
According to news.cnet.com , the capacity of a typical modern lithium-ion rechargeable battery begins to fall after about 150 charging cycles. The Sonata battery developers from Boston Power have managed to increase this figure almost sevenfold. Of course, you will have to pay for the pleasure - the cost of the Sonata will be 20-30 dollars higher than that of conventional lithium-ion batteries. However, the durability of the purchase should recoup the costs. Moreover, according to Boston Power, for three years of using a laptop, 40% of users change the battery five times. Taking into account the fact that the average cost of a battery is $ 150 - the total amount is approximately equal to the cost of a budget laptop. ')
Boston Power gives the Sonata batteries a three-year warranty and claims that PVC and heavy metals (cadmium, arsenic, mercury) are not used in their production. It is assumed that the end-of-life batteries will be returned to the manufacturer and sent for recycling.
Interestingly, HP's exclusive doesn’t break off; it’s just that this company will be the first to install new batteries in their computers. Boston Power is already in talks with another laptop manufacturer, and the company plans to have similar batteries for mobile devices and cars.
