Medvedev abolished Runet censorship

At the request of the government, United Russia deputies have withdrawn the amendments, forcing Internet providers to block "extremist" Internet sites in Russia, Vedomosti reports .

The bill was introduced a week ago. Five United Russia proposed to amend Article 13 of the law on extremist activity. At their suggestion, after the “extremist” materials appeared on the site again, the court could decide to stop accessing the site in Russia, and the providers were obliged to “take action” to block the site.

The expert who participated in the drafting of the bill believes that the reason for the withdrawal was the contradiction of this initiative to the statements made by President Dmitry Medvedev in his message to the Federal Assembly. The president promised to provide freedom of speech with technological innovations: “No official will be able to impede discussions on the Internet,” he said.

In addition, several of the largest Internet providers have already complained to Medvedev on the initiative of the deputies. Source "Vedomosti" believes that the president also has some informal contacts with Internet users.
