Neither "Alpha", nor "System"

The German government is opposed to the Sistema Telecom exchange deal (included in Sistema) for the shares of Deutsche Telekom (DT) in Germany, explaining this by “political and strategic reasons”. The Handelsblatt and Financial Times newspapers, citing sources in DT and the government, say that for the time being there will not be a public rejection of the offer of Russian business, as there are fears of spoiling business relations. However, as reported by Vedomosti , quoting Handelsblatt, members of the supervisory board are agitated by the “ambitious aggressive plans of the Russian gang” and are developing a repulse strategy. In their opinion, our oligarchs are even more dangerous than American financial investors.

Information on the ongoing negotiations has not yet received official confirmation directly from Sistema and DT. All information is insider, and, according to them, the Russian side rushed not to a 10-20% stake, as previously thought , but to a blocking 25% + 1. Aton analysts report that Sistema wanted to get such a package. exchanging Russian assets (Sistema Telecom) for a 15% stake in DT. After using these 15% as collateral, Sistema would attract a loan to buy another 10% DT from KfW, but German media, analysts say, confirm doubts about the realism of this deal.

The failure to “break the bank” seems to have befallen the Russian holding Alfa Group, which recently made an offer to Vodafone Group PLC, a British mobile phone operator, saying it was buying a 20% stake in the company for about 15 billion pounds sterling. According to The Times, Altimo, which manages Alfa Group’s telecommunications assets (shares of MegaFon, VimpelCom, Ukrainian operator Kyivstar and Turkish Turkcell), offered Vodafone to form a joint venture or enter into a merger transaction.

But today The Times is somewhat arrogant in announcing that the response of the British mobile operator Vodafone to the expression of interest on the part of Alfa Group "is quite comparable with the reaction of a person who is invited to dinner in a bear den." Obviously, the response of Vodafone, which today has spread around the domestic media, was “we are not conducting any negotiations”. According to Russian experts, Altimo will hardly be of interest to anyone in the West until this telecommunications subsidiary of Alpha resolves conflicts with the Norwegian Telenor at VimpelCom and the IPOC Megafon Foundation, RBC reports. “Hardly anyone wants to discuss options for a merger with a company that is still suing for its assets,” they say.
