Germany hands over 100,000 photos to Wikipedia

The German State Archives agreed to transfer to Wikipedia about 100,000 images, which will be uploaded under the German version of the free license Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 3.0. These photos cover the period from 1860 to the present day.

All images will be scanned, interpolated to 800 pixels on the long side and will soon appear in the public domain. They will be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons repository using the User: BArchBot script (will appear on this page ), after which users will sort them by linking them to individual articles.

This is the largest donation of content to Wikipedia in the entire history of this project and possibly the largest donation in the entire history of free culture.

In general, the German archive plans over time to put in open access 11 million images that are in its funds.
