Microsoft patented "video browser"

Application for US Patent No. 20060120624 describes a technology that is capable of automatically composing the “content” of any video film and displaying it on the screen in graphical form.

As can be seen in the diagram ( JPG ), published in the annex to the patent, the main element of the new video browser is an intelligent system for automatic clustering of video sequences. Behind this complex name are algorithms that can automatically recognize individual scenes in a long video.

In principle, the technology of automatic selection of scenes from a video series has existed for a long time. They are based on the analysis of color, movement, objects in the frame and other characteristics. Microsoft has not invented anything new here, but has patented only a way to visualize key frames and conveniently view these fragments.

The first frames of all scenes are displayed on the right side of the video browser in the form of a mosaic (in the diagram this section is called “Mosaic Display Windows”), and clicking on each frame instantly launches the corresponding fragment of the video. The system is somewhat similar to the table of contents of DVDs, but only it is not compiled manually, but automatically.

Judging by the screenshot, the video browser interface is very similar to Windows Media Player, so it is likely that the technology of automatic analysis and viewing of video files will be embedded in this program.
