"System" will give "daughter" for a piece of German telecom

Founder of "System"
Vladimir Evtushenkov is ready to part with the full package of shares of Sistema Telecom for a 10–20% stake in the German concern Deutschen Telecom (DT). Not a single Russian businessman has yet succeeded in becoming a major shareholder of the European telecommunications giant, and it is unknown whether Yevtushenkov will succeed. Negotiations are still at the initial stage, and it is still too early to talk about their outcome.

The Financial Times Deutschland newspaper reports that many members of its supervisory board already know about the proposal made by Sistema to the general director of the German company Kai-Uwe Rikke. It is known from government sources that the deal was one of the topics of the unofficial part of President Putin’s visit to the country three weeks ago. Yevtushenkov was then announced among the participants of the Russian-German meeting of top medics in Munich, which was also attended by Vladimir Putin and Minister of Communications Leonid Reiman. According to the newspaper, the Sistema initiative is one of Russia's most high-profile attempts to enter the European market lately. This company has tried to settle in Europe before, but every time there were stronger competitors on its way - for example, Vodafone or Telenor.

But Germany, too, if it acquires Sistema Telecom, I suppose, will get a lot. According to experts, given by "Vedomosti", this "daughter" of the AFC costs 12-15% of the German DT. Sistema Telecom manages the telecommunications assets of the parent company, including MTS, Comstar - UTS, MGTS, Stream, MTT, etc. It is included in Sistema's leading business area, telecommunications, which share in 2005 it was 73.7% compared with 78.4% in 2004.

Both sides - “System and DT” - do not cover the deal yet. But, as reported by Vedomosti, one of the members of the supervisory board of DT confirmed that he participated in the discussion of the proposal of the Russian company. The top management of Sistema claims that he has not heard of any transaction or ongoing negotiations. The partnership both companies have been doing for a long time: DT owned a 40% stake in MTS, but during the restructuring period it sold it to pay off a huge debt of 64 billion euros.
