YouTube competitors start paying for content

One of YouTube’s competitors, Metacafe, yesterday announced the launch of the “Producer Awards” affiliate program, in which the authors of the most popular videos on the site will receive a cash reward at the rate of $ 5 per 1000 impressions . This is a really generous gift. For example, at this rate, the famous “Dancing Belarusian at the wedding” , which has now become a YouTube star, could have earned more than $ 3000, as of today there are about 630 thousand views of this video.

In order to receive payment on Metacafe, you need a video to receive at least 20 thousand impressions, that is, the minimum check is $ 100. Another condition - the video should have a rating of at least 3 points. Thus, materials of dubious content and poor-quality videos are screened out.

Under the terms of the copyright agreement, Metacafe receives a non- exclusive license to use the video, that is, the author reserves the right to place it on other sites and retains all other rights.

The monthly audience of Metacafe is 17 million viewers , and the traffic has grown to 400 million hits per month. Of course, this is an order of magnitude less than that of YouTube, but even with such an audience you can earn a lot of money. At the moment, the most popular video on the site has already brought its creator more than $ 23 thousand.

Big money for authors is a completely insignificant amount for sites of the scale of YouTube, which allocate one million dollars per month only for paying for traffic. The program of royalties can be quite an effective way for many sites to acquire the "start-up capital" of users to try to catch up with the leader. Of course, this is not enough. It is necessary to allocate both in terms of functionality and convenience for users. For example, a distinctive feature of the same Metacafe is the preliminary content filtering by the users themselves, even before the video is published on the site. The preview program involved more than 100 thousand people. Each new file is distributed among a small number of “censors” who can approve or “kill” it before publication. Thus, low-quality videos are filtered from the very beginning and do not get on the site at all.

By the way, after the purchase of YouTube by Internet giant Google , Metacafe became the largest independent online service for publishing amateur videos.
