J & P: You can make good money on smartphones

J'son & Partners predicts that by the end of 2006 over 1.21 million smartphones will be sold in Russia. The first half of the year in the market for these devices corresponded to 500,000 smartphones sold with a sales volume of $ 200 million. Over the year, the market grew by more than 100%. Now, as the authors of the study note, Russian buyers are ready to spend from $ 400 to $ 600 on the purchase of a smartphone.

The most popular with the owners of these devices are Internet services, instant messaging services, E-mail (including Push E-mail), RSS news. In addition, smartphones are valued for the ability to read books from them and listen to music. In the future, LBS services (Location Based Services, are implemented based on subscriber location), access services to the corporate network, security services, as well as advertising and mobile TV will enjoy success.

Now in 50% of cases, a smartphone is bought for reasons of prestige. In 2007, when together with the expansion of communication services and content services will be sold, it is estimated that about 2 million devices, the smartphone will become a more familiar thing. According to forecasts, by the end of 2007, smartphones will account for 5% of the total mobile phone market in Russia.

In the meantime, the share of smartphones in the country, when compared with the share of traditional mobile devices, remains at 3%, but in the first half of 2005 it was only 1%. At the same time, according to J'son & Partners, both mobile operators and content providers will be able to get more profits and increase VAS (and as a result - APRU). The company's research shows that by 2008, those and others will earn about $ 60-80 million, providing additional services to smartphone users.

Speaking about the users themselves, analysts of the company note: “If at the beginning of the year the main social groups owning smartphones were students and managers of various levels (more than 50% of all device users), then according to the results of the half year, there is a redistribution of the smartphone fleet across all social groups.” It is also a sign that the smartphone is gradually becoming a mass consumer item.
