From sources inside
Google , the contents of
two internal documents that were distributed to the company's employees earlier this year became known. These are “Main tasks and guidelines for 2006”, as well as “Goals and key results of the third quarter. 2006 ". The documents contain a lot of interesting information and slightly open the veil of secrecy over Google's development strategy.
Now that the year has come to an end, we were able to check how Google’s results fit the plans and what news we can expect in the coming months. Here are some excerpts from internal documentation.
* Google seeks to improve the productivity of its programmers and produces special tools for internal needs, for example, an
internal search directory that contains information about all public search queries that affect Google. This is information about which Google services users are looking for and cannot find.
* To consolidate its position as the world leader in the information search market, Google plans to establish the world's largest laboratory for the study of
artificial intelligence .
')
* The list of priorities includes the
elimination of search spam in the issuance of the 20 most popular languages. Apparently, the Russian language should be included in this list. Other measures are planned to improve the relevance of the search results, as well as the study of user preferences and improvement of the search engine interface.
* Google sets the task of promoting its advertising platform and
its own advertising platform , including expanding communities and content. Apparently, it is for this reason that the popular
YouTube site was purchased.
In addition to all of the above, Google’s internal documents speak of a focus on innovative development, on promoting their own software (especially among inexperienced Internet users), as well as on
switching the main headquarters to solar energy .
In the second document, “Goals and Key Results of the 3rd Quarter. 2006 "another important task is mentioned:" a radical improvement "of the news service
Google News . It turns out that internal testing of the
Google News prototype in Q4 has already been scheduled. 2006. These “radical improvements” consist in the fact that for each news there will be mentioned “other news sources, and organizations and individuals mentioned in the news text will have the opportunity to discuss various issues”. It is difficult to say how it will be implemented. It seems that nothing like this on the Internet still exists.
At the same time, Marissa Mayer is personally responsible for ensuring that "all sites with more than 10 million hits are displayed in a second or faster in 95% of cases." Apparently, this is either about pre-caching the search results in the browser (in fact, this function is already working), or about mirroring the most popular sites on Google servers.
Other divisions of Google received tasks with incomprehensible to a stranger language. For example, the
Gmail development team should ensure “70% user satisfaction” in Gmail version 2.0. Similarly unusual tasks were also obtained by developers who are working on a search index, advertising system,
Google Video programs and
Picasa Web .
Another interesting task posed to developers is to find a way to extract relevant
dates and geographic data from web pages, so that users can “view the results on a timeline.”
Among other things, the internal document contains an instruction: "Calculate the number of Google products and reduce it by 20%." However,
Sergey Brin himself spoke about this
recently .
