Sysadmins, today is our day

On this day, we shot a warm tube video for you, in which our system administrators talked about their work: about what they are interested in, what inspires us, what kind of talismans we have. We are people like everyone else, of course, we live not only work, we still have free time for various hobbies, we also talked about and showed about this.

And under the cut you will find a short story about our work and what we are doing.

We have a large company - several thousand people, and a fleet of several tens of thousands of servers, running several hundred highly loaded services and used by hundreds of millions of users, is managed by about a hundred system administrators, and we traditionally lack hands!

Our system administrators make sure that the services work continuously and smoothly. They plan to increase computing capacities and add them in a timely manner, participate in the development of a scalable and fault-tolerant architecture of projects, are engaged in backup, monitoring, configuration and launch of services. They know everything about Linux, network protocols, web servers and various databases. About how to configure, optimize and ensure reliability, as our services are usually located in several data centers. Our system administrators are the same people who respond to incidents and conduct their subsequent analysis so that such troubles no longer arise.

We have very large volumes - equipment, data, traffic - work needs to be optimized and automated. For example, now we are actively working on the creation of common systems that allow us to quickly and conveniently put both servers and services into operation. We write a lot of our own and use various virtualization systems based on open source. For example, for our internal development and for our public cloud, we actively use OpenStack, and last year we started developing a platform based on Kubernetes, which allowed us to launch our projects faster, be even more resilient and sleep a little more at night.

If you want to know in more detail what knowledge you need to have a system administrator in Mail.ru Group, then here is a list for reading for the summer (though it will end soon): linux.mail.ru/books .
