Mozilla started creating Firefox 3.0

Work on the Firefox 3.0 browser, codenamed “Gran Paradiso”, began when the introduction of new features in the preliminary version of Firefox 2.0 was officially “frozen”. Among the many features that are planned to be implemented in the “Gran Paradiso” is the Places system for integrated storage of bookmarks and surfing history with support for tags and full-text search.

As you know, the Places system was first built into Firefox 2.0, but then it was decided to abandon it . “Places was simply not ready when Firefox 2.0 was released,” said Mike Schroepfer, director of development at Mozilla Corp. “We definitely didn’t want to add it until it was one hundred percent ready.”

The system Places, apparently, will be the main "highlight" of the third version of Firefox. It embodies the most global rethinking of the bookmark storage model in the entire history of browsers. Now, not only links to “favorite pages” will be stored in the archive of the browser, but the entire history of surfing in a structured way, with the possibility of full-text search in this database.

“Bookmarks and the history of surfing have not changed for many years. We have a number of ideas on how a person can manage his own section of the Network, ”says Schröpfer, referring to the information stored on the hard disk of a personal computer.

In addition to the Places system, in the third version of the browser, the Cairo 2D page rendering technology with hardware 2D rendering support can be implemented. Firefox 3.0 browser will be based on a more advanced Gecko 1.9 engine, whereas Firefox 1.5 and Firefox 2 were created based on Gecko 1.8.

Unfortunately, the introduction of hardware support for Cairo 2D will have a negative effect: the new browser will not work on Windows 95, 98 and Millennium platforms. The refusal to support outdated operating systems was proclaimed in June , and already then caused a wave of outrage among users.

The exact list of new features in Firefox 3.0 is not yet ready. The Mozilla community is now conducting a survey of developers and users about what else to implement in Firefox 3.0. As a result of brainstorming, a large document with a list of ideas was compiled. Only in the last week more than a thousand sentences have been added there. Among them are functions for corporate control, restrictions on JavaScript, as well as the implementation of a new function of the browser in the “reduced privileges” mode under Windows and duplication of this mode on Mac and Linux operating systems.

The new version of Firefox should see the light at the end of 2007. Thus, the two-year tradition of releasing new releases in the fall of each year will be continued.
