Why one of the largest IT companies joined CNCF - a fund developing cloud infrastructure

A month ago, Apple became a member of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. We understand what it means.

Why CNCF

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) supports the Linux Foundation. Its goal is the development and promotion of cloud technologies. The Foundation was founded in 2015 by large IaaS and SaaS providers, IT companies and network equipment manufacturers - Google, Red Hat, VMware, Cisco, Intel, Docker and others.

Today, even fund majors like Adidas, GitHub and The New York Times are among the fund’s participants. A month ago, Apple joined them - it received a platinum status and will pay $ 370,000 each year for the development of open source projects.

Apple and open source projects have a long history. The corporation was one of the first to actively use open source software in product development. An example would be OS X. At the core of this operating system are components of another OS - Darwin. It combined the code written by Apple itself with that received from NeXTSTEP and FreeBSD.

Representatives of the CNCF and the Linux Foundation say that having joined the open fund, the Apple Company wants to share its expertise. Engineers want to pay back the open source community for their work and contribute to the development of cloud IT infrastructure. Apple representatives in their usual manner do not comment on the decisions of the corporation.

What will it affect

Cloud development will go faster. CNCF has launched projects such as the Kubernetes container orchestration system, a Prometheus infrastructure monitoring tool, a CoreDNS server, and the Envoy proxy service. Before joining CNCF, Apple took an active part in their development (in particular, Kubernetes).

Becoming a member of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, the corporation will be able to more closely communicate with colleagues. Due to platinum status, Apple’s opinion will be taken into account when determining the development vector of cloud tools. CNCF is currently working on more than fifteen projects to protect the production environment and files in the cloud, as well as messaging. Apple expertise can accelerate their development.

There will be more open projects. Apple will help with the development of existing projects and bring new ones. The company has already transferred to the open source core XNU - a component of the aforementioned Darwin - as well as the Swift programming language, which today is in 13th place in the TIOBE rating.

A year ago, Apple revealed the source code of FoundationDB, a distributed NoSQL database. Unlike other similar systems, operations in FoundationDB are consistent with the principles of ACID : atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability of data.

Over a couple of weeks , more than seven thousand developers showed interest in the project, and a hundred new threads were opened on the forum. The company plans to continue to develop new open tools with the community.

Who else recently joined CNCF

In March of this year, CNCF representatives announced that 59 new organizations had joined the community. At the end of May, the number of fund participants overcame the mark of 400 companies. Among them are both small startups and large IT companies.

For example, Nvidia has become a new member of the foundation, which will be engaged in the development of artificial intelligence systems in the cloud environment. It is worth noting Elastic - stack developers, consisting of Elasticsearch, Kibana, Beats and Logstash - as well as the manufacturer of telecommunications equipment Ericsson.

In addition to these organizations, the list includes several cloud providers, Internet service providers, consulting agencies, integrators, and information security companies.

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation is convinced that new entrants and their technologies will contribute to the development of the cloud market and bring valuable expertise to the open source software ecosystem.
