Digital TV waiting for the golden mountains after 2017

2017 for Russia should be marked by the transition to digital broadcasting. So far, the volume of the pay-TV market is small, but in the future it promises growth to tens of billions of dollars a year. Analysts of the agency Prime-TASS , based on expert estimates, provide calculations on the main components of future income.

Since the nationwide broadcasting system will be involved in the global digitization process, TV audiences will need to buy new devices to receive the signal. According to the estimates, it will take at least 60 million consoles to receive the “numbers” on analog TVs. Having paid an average of $ 100 per device, the consumer will bring about $ 6 billion to the market. “There is also equipment for broadcasting networks, the total cost of which across the country will be about the same,” add analysts. “And all this is only at the stage of deployment of digital TV systems.”

Subscription fees and advertising fees together will result in no less revenue. If we take the current average income from a subscriber as the initial one, taking into account that only half of the TV viewers will agree to pay-TV service, an indicator of $ 7.2 billion a year is released. Thus, the volume of the digital TV market can be compared with the volume of the cellular or fixed line industry.

In addition, with an increase in the number of channels broadcast, the television advertising market will multiply. It is explained that a sixfold multiplication of the number of channels does not provoke the growth of the advertising market on the same scale, because advertising prices are likely to decrease. However, without a doubt, the turnover of television advertising will be much larger than the current one (the market volume in 2005 was $ 2.5 billion).

Taking into account all the listed components, the conclusion was made: after 2017, revenues from basic and related services of pay-TV in Russia will be at least $ 10 billion per year. An important remark - the opportunity to watch free TV channels from the Russians will remain.

The last question is on the agenda of a number of interested departments - the Ministry of Culture of Mass Communications, the Ministry of Information Technology and Communications, etc. According to preliminary information, representatives of the ministries agree that the free access to the so-called “social package” of TV channels must be kept . Presumably, this “package” will include the federal channels “First”, “Russia”, NTV, “Culture”.

However, free TV will take no more than half of the frequency resource in only one frequency band. If there are three such bands in each city, then about 30 more commercial TV channels will be able to start broadcasting.
