“Sky Link” missiles can cost “$ 200 million” to Sistema

If Sky Link does not connect another 100,000 subscribers by the end of the year, the company can only have one owner. According to Vedomosti , AFK Sistema will have to spend $ 200 million to buy 50% of Sky Link shares, now owned by Carmarthen. This payment is considered as compensation for losses of a foreign partner, however, as was said, it can be avoided if the cellular operator does execute its business plan.

According to Sistema and Carmarthen, another compensation option is possible. If Sky Link does not achieve “certain quantitative goals” by the first half of 2007, instead of buying 50% of the shares, Sistema can pay the partner a percentage of the amount of $ 200 million - such that the degree of deviation of the achieved indicators from those that were scheduled. Note, the share of Carmarthen in the enterprise will remain. According to Jeffrey Galmond, the head of this company, the results will be checked against the planned shareholders in February-March 2007.

So far, it is known that for 10 months of the current year, Sky Link managed to connect about 90,000 new subscribers, and two months before the end of the period, another 100,000 will have to be “covered.” The task was set, according to the director of public relations operator Olga Pesterova, included doubling the number of subscribers by the end of 2006, while maintaining the average bill per client / ARPU / at a level not lower than $ 50 per month. Now the company's average ARPU is $ 58, and in Moscow - $ 62 per month. According to the results of last year, the operator served 304 566 subscribers.

According to experts, to connect 100,000 subscribers by the end of the year is a very difficult task, but doable. “In the fourth quarter, cellular operators usually manage to sell significantly more contracts than previous ones,” adds Pesterova. She also paid attention to the good dynamics of sales of the recently launched “Turbo” tariff, which is focused on active Internet users. In addition, the company has entered the regions, and by the end of the year promises to open several more networks.
