Machine learning and data analysis: magistracy of the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg

This year, a new master's program “Industrial Programming” is launched at the faculty of the St. Petersburg School of Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science of the St. Petersburg Campus of the Higher School of Economics. This program, like the Master’s program in Software Development at ITMO University (we wrote about it here ), was created in collaboration with JetBrains . In this post we will describe what unites these two magistracies and how they differ.

What unites these two programs?

  1. The programs of both magistracies were developed from scratch in cooperation with representatives of leading IT companies and existing scientists from various fields of computer science.
  2. Studying in both magistracies is very dense and is designed for students who want to study and are ready to spend most of their time studying.
  3. In both master programs, great attention is paid to practice: during each semester, the student works on some kind of educational project under the supervision of the head, and at the end of the semester reports on the results. In addition, between the first and second year students undergo summer practice and at the end of the summer report on the results.
  4. In both magistracies, small sets are planned, small groups in practical classes, regular student surveys, and so on.
  5. Some teachers will work in both master's programs.
  6. Location

It so happened that the HSE building is located across the road from the Times, where almost all ITMO magistracy classes take place - the title photo of the HSE building is made from the window of the ITMO classroom.

What is the difference? Which program to choose?

If these programs have so much in common, then legitimate questions arise: what is the difference then and which program to choose?

The difference between the programs will be in the specialization:

As a result, these two master programs practically do not overlap in courses:

Despite this, we would like to preserve the possibility of the interaction of these two programs with each other. What is this about? We would like the students of one program to have the opportunity to take the courses of the second program they are interested in and vice versa. To this end, next year we plan to transfer the programs to the network mode, concluding an agreement between HSE - St. Petersburg, ITMO University and JetBrains. In the upcoming academic year, we will offer students of both programs corresponding courses as part of elective courses. In addition, some team projects that we will offer for student practices will also be shared, i.e. It is possible that students from two universities will work together on the same project.

Admission campaigns for both master programs are already underway. Choose the one that you are more interested in and submit an application!
