iCTF 2008 - Exhibitor List Formed
As you may know, the International Capture the Flag 2008 competition will take place on December 5th.
So ... the list of participants of the competition iCTF 2008 is formed.
About 30 teams from different countries, including Russia, will participate in iCTF 2008.
Russia will be represented by the following teams:
1. Team HackerDom (very often participate in such competitions, often take prizes)
2. SiBears team (also quite famous team in CTF circles)
3. Team b @ nnieZ (which is remarkable, the team captain is a girl)
4. Team RST / GHC / UKT (novice players)
5. KEVA team (unfortunately I can’t say anything about them)
6. CIT Team
7. StopUsToo Team
Now briefly what is iCTF:
iCTF - distributed competition for defense and attack. Several teams take part in the game and the goal of each is to protect your server and break someone else’s. Each team is given a virtual server (the last time was Linux, but what will happen this time is not yet known) on which a number of services are running (for all commands, the server and the set of commands are the same). Services have a specific set of vulnerabilities known only by the organizers. The goal of each team is to save a set of services and not allow others to capture the “flag” of their server (each service has one or more flags, they can change over time, in theory they are available only to the registered user). Each team can explore its system and look for vulnerabilities in it, apply the knowledge gained against others. The server is monitored by the scoring system, it monitors both the running services and the burglary.
For the general public, the competition has been open since 2003 and is held about twice a year. iCTF is open to teams from any countries, the condition for them is one - a group of hackers must represent one of the educational institutions and only students should participate in it, professionals are not allowed to play. To recreate the real situation, the authors use a special software that makes from many educational institutions scattered around the planet a single network, and also an image for VMware, which is a working server with a set of software.
