Iran reduces speed

According to the decision of the Iranian government, local Internet providers limit the speed of Internet access to private customers and Internet cafes, reports Reuters .

A representative of the Ministry of Telecommunications of Iran last week told the state news agency IRNA that providers are forbidden to provide access to the network at speeds higher than 128 Kbps. The reasons for the ban officials do not comment. Restrictions will not be lifted until the adoption of the law governing Internet access. It is not yet clear whether this means that after the adoption of the law, residents of the country will be able to freely use high-speed Internet or prohibitions will continue.

A representative of one of the service providers, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the speed is limited only to individuals and public Internet access points, legal entities will not feel the change. In another firm they say that they have not yet received official notification of the new order of work, but they have already limited the speed ("We do not need unnecessary problems").

Those who criticize the decision of the authorities, most often say that such a ban would complicate the training of students in universities, scientific research. The opposition notes that limiting the speed of access to the Internet is a logical continuation of the policy of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who constantly criticizes Western countries.

“Once again, we can see how the new government limits the channels for obtaining reliable information,” says an article published in the opposition newspaper Etemad-e Melli. The authorities closed the leading pro-reformist newspaper, and strict censorship was introduced in other media. Access to the BBC website, through which, according to the authorities, anti-Iranian propaganda is conducted, has been closed.

Oppositionists say that the authorities consider journalists, scientists and students to be their main enemies. The government denies the allegations, noting that it welcomed criticism. But for some reason, it prohibits placing satellite dishes on houses: “they bring harmful Western values to the houses of Iranians.”
