US Army buys new game

Since 2006, US Army soldiers have been trained using the DARWARS Ambush first-person shooter (this game, specially modified by DARPA, is in the photo). Since then, the army has purchased more than 3,000 licensed copies to train infantry units, the air force, paratroopers, the coast guard and other units.

But this game is already outdated, so now the army is going to upgrade . They say that a new engine has already been found and in the coming weeks an official contract with the developer will be signed. Among the requirements for the new engine is the presence of a map editing function, support for communication with the combat command center, the availability of a mobile version and communication via the Internet.

According to plans, over the next year a new game (codenamed Game After Ambush) will be installed in 70 training gaming centers in 53 US Army units around the world, including Germany, Italy and South Korea. Each gaming center will consist of 52 computers equipped with special equipment: mice, headphones and steering wheels.

Soldiers will be able to drive combat vehicles, control airplanes and helicopters, shoot weapons on virtual maps up to 100 x 100 km. The new game will fully emulate the real actions of the soldiers, including real missions for escorting, urban battles and responding to a sudden attack.

In addition, a new unit has been formed in the US Army that will deal exclusively with computer games. $ 50 million from the federal budget was allocated for its financing. The program is designed for five years.

The military leadership approached the issue with all seriousness. Employees of the new unit must think through and document all aspects of the use of video games in the army. Specialists will monitor trends in the gaming market and select the appropriate design for training fighters.
