Entropic - the new distributed package registry for Node.js
Go right to the point. CJ Silverio, a former CTO of NPM Inc., yesterday announced a new distributed registry for Node.js packages.
Why is it important? Almost every one of us uses the NPM registry of us, but not many of us know that the private company NPM Inc. manages this registry. And to support a centralized registry, you need a lot of money and money. Some part of this money the company earns as hosting private packages, and the other part is the money of venture investors. And investors want to discourage their investments. Go big or go home, as they say in the Valley.
Apparently in order to start earning the founder Isaac Schlueter hired a new CEO , while he himself went to the position of Chier Product Officer. Soon enough , a wave of layoffs swept through the company and many took it very ambiguously, because the main motto of NPM is Nice Peoples Matter. People were fired without notice even by their immediate manager. What were the real reasons for the unknown, but it is indicative of the fact that some of the dismissed people lost their compensation, but refused to sign the NDA not to disclose. ')
It turned out a situation in which the most important registry of the js-ecosystem is managed by a company with not very clear policies. Apparently, this fact prompted to act and create a finally distributed registry that does not depend on anyone but us.
The project has just begun. The entire code was written in 5 weeks by Chris Dickinson and CJ Silverio and provides, so far, the basic functionality: the registry and the cli-tool for accessing it.
