IBM supercomputer will think like a cat?

The US government allocated IBM a grant of $ 4.9 million to create a computer system that would be able to work like a brain, moreover at the neural level. The project related to the field of cognitive computing (related to the perception and "understanding" of the external world by the artificial intelligence system) involves neurobiologists, physiologists and, of course, IT specialists.

The key idea of the project is to create a relatively reasonable (apparently, we are not talking about a full-fledged AI), which in its structure will be similar to the brain (human, cats - not important) and will also function. To do this, as an “iron”, one of the IBM supercomputers will be used. In addition, leading experts from several American universities will try to “teach” this supercomputer to behave like a set of neurons. The main goal is to repeat patterns of behavior in various kinds of simulations. For the future, the task is to create a “brain” with a level of development not lower than that of the cat.

Project manager Dr. Dharmendra Modha already has some experience with this kind of research. So, last year, a team of scientists under his leadership worked on a similar project: they used the IBM BlueGene supercomputer to “emulate” the mouse brain with 55 million neurons.

It is interesting that many experts around the world, having learned about the project, gave their comments in the style of "the US government leaves the project on a starvation diet." Indeed, $ 5 million for such a scientific scope is sunflower seeds. But, wait and see.
