How I rode a drone taxi

Greetings to all readers of our blog! My name is Edward, in RDTEX I manage the Center for Industry Solutions, but today my post is not about that.



I want to share the experience of testing a drone taxi from Yandex. I had such an opportunity during the conference TsIPR-2019, which was held last week in Innopolis (Tatarstan).







My colleague and I managed to test a sample of a future unmanned taxi. The drone is built on the basis of the Toyota Prius (in my opinion, this model itself has to futuristic experiments), and inside and outside it looks like a modern reliable car, so there was no nervousness from the fact that the driver’s seat was empty. Since it is still forbidden to operate the car completely without supervision, an instructor-tester was sitting in the passenger seat, who, it should be noted, almost did not interfere with the operation of the equipment.

The trip itself was short, around 10 minutes. During this time, managed to observe the reaction of the drone on the appearance of interference in the form of a 99 model Zhiguli and a pedestrian on a scooter. In both cases, the car reacted to the advance, that is, tried to predict the worst possible trajectory of the movement of other participants, namely, it slowed down and missed.

To tell the truth, if I were driving myself, I would not pay attention to these interferences, since we did not threaten each other. But this is my driver experience and intuition, and the autopilot uses only algorithms and probabilities.



In conclusion, we can conclude that the unmanned taxi still requires improvements in software, but it can be said with confidence that the future that we saw in science fiction films is already on the threshold.
