Digital music sales continue to grow

In the first half of 2006, world music sales decreased by 4% to $ 13.7 billion. The explanation lies in a 10% drop in sales of physical media - the industry is getting less and less from the trade in CDs.

The digital market, which grew by 106% to $ 945 million, is also encouraging. This means that network sales accounted for 11% of the industry’s total revenue, while at the end of 2005 the corresponding figure was 5.5%, Reuters reports.

In IFPI - the International Federation of Phonogram Producers - they expect that the growth of digital sales will later compensate for the drop in “physical”. According to representatives of the federation, the “explosive growth” of digital music services began in the first half of 2004, when the market volume was $ 134 million. “The development was severely hurt by pirates, but the digital industry resisted by offering legally acceptable alternatives,” says IFPI. It is known that in the US, digital sales increased by 84% this year and accounted for 18% of the whole music market. But the most "advanced" in the online music trade is South Korea, where it accounts for 51% of the market. Japan (11%), Italy (9%) and Great Britain (8%) are quite developed in this respect.

Sales of music products on physical media, as already mentioned, fell by 10% worldwide. However, it has been declining in this market segment for a long time, and this happens not without the influence of sellers of counterfeit products, the emphasis is made by the IFPI.

Forecasts for the end of this year, the organization makes it more or less optimistic, causing them to be the coming pre-holiday surge in consumer activity.
