The future is here: AI will control melee on American fighters

Artificial intelligence is used in many areas, including industry, science, and military affairs. Agency DARPA decided to use AI to improve the effectiveness of melee fighters. The pilot in the conditions of flight and melee is subjected to significant overloads, which affects the effectiveness of his actions. Well, AI can help in this case.

DARPA has launched an artificial intelligence program for the military, which the agency called Air Combat Evolution (ACE). It is part of a larger program - the conduct of "mosaic" hostilities (mosaic warfare), implemented by the US Department of Defense.

Mosaic fighting is based on the principle of co-ordination of maneuvers and battles guided by pilots and unmanned aerial combat systems. Pilots, according to the concept, will be responsible for strategic battle management, not tactical. That is, a significant amount of hostilities will be carried out by aircraft, and the pilot will exercise overall command of the battle.

In addition, the pilot will be able to give orders to the accompanying drones. The fighter will introduce combat autopilots, which will perform tasks to defeat the enemy.



AI training is planned to be performed in the same way as pilot training - experienced pilot instructors will take care of this. Initially, artificial intelligence will begin to teach maneuvering, gradually moving to more complex actions. At the beginning, instructors will accompany combat drones, their task is to collect data on the actions of such systems.

According to the authors of the new program, it is not so difficult to train AI, as the air combat itself has a limited number of factors to be taken into account. Basically, these are the rules dictated by the physics of the processes (aerodynamics) and the characteristics of the airplanes themselves. AI will be able to “keep in mind” these factors in the course of hostilities, which will make the melee combat as effective as possible.
