Head of Sun Microsystems fights for blogosphere rights

Jonathan Schwartz, who heads Sun Microsystems , is rightfully considered one of the most famous bloggers in the world. He runs his own blog , where he talks in detail about what is happening inside and around the “sun”. Moreover, more recently, his blog has become available not only for English-speaking readers, but also, for example, for Russians .

At the end of September, Jonathan sent a letter to Christopher Cox, chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission, with a request to assist changes in US legislation on the publication of corporate information. The fact is that according to the rule of equal access of investors to significant information about the company (Regulation Fair Disclosure or Reg FD), no one has the right to gain an advantage in obtaining new information about the state of affairs in a company, therefore all of them are obliged to openly publish their financial performance - or not publish at all. However, the Internet - and in particular, blogs - are not recognized as sufficient means for the public dissemination of information.

The head of the Sun did not like this situation, so Jonathan Schwartz and Sun General Counsel Michael Dillon prepared and sent a letter to Christopher Cox. He is also known to take a positive view of the Internet, so Sun chose the right recipient.

Arguments in favor of blogs as sources including official information are quite convincing. Especially for the USA, where a huge audience has a permanent access to the Internet. Unlike press releases, which are now used to officially notify the media about the company's news and which are available only to a limited number of journalists, a corporate blog is a more accessible means of disseminating information and, therefore, practically meets the requirements of US law.
