The November
list of the 500 most powerful supercomputers in the world , updated this week, presented a sensation. An unusual development from the Shanghai Supercomputer Center appeared at the tenth place in it. This is a newly assembled
Dawning 5000A cluster with a declared capacity of R
max = 180.6 TFlops. The cluster runs on AMD x86_64 Opteron Quad Core 1900 MHz processors (30720 cores, 122.9 TB of memory) and, most surprisingly, is controlled by the Windows HPC Server 2008 operating system.
Experts are
shocked that Microsoft is so serious about the supercomputer market and, in general, that on Windows you can build such a productive system. But the Chinese succeeded.
