Mail.Ru launches video hosting

Mail.Ru has entered a promising video hosting market by launching Video@Mail.Ru . The Rambler-Vision service will be the closest competitor of the service, but the Rambler service was launched back in 2004 and has a regular monthly audience of 760 thousand people.

However, Mail.Ru is counting on the same piece of cake: “At first, the daily audience of the new project will be 50-100 thousand people,” Dmitry Grishin, the company's general director, told Vedomosti, and more than 1 million people will visit it in the next month. ". The basis for these forecasts are the general attendance of the portal - 22 million visitors per month.

On the site Video@Mail.Ru plan to post both amateur and licensed content. But the custom video will dominate. Over time, the company will begin to include advertising in it, and potentially it could be the main source of income from the service. In addition, traditional display advertising will bring in money. It is supposed to recoup the $ 150,000 already spent on marketing, research, service development, testing, server purchase and hosting.

The service interface is made similar to the Photo@Mail.Ru interface. As with the photo hosting service, Video@Mail.Ru allows you to create albums by uploading videos from a hard disk or from sites on the Internet. The service accepts files of most common formats and any resolution. Users can comment and vote for other people's work, publish them in their blogs, etc.

For those who are not yet ready to publish their work, but want to meet with someone else, the site provides a thematic catalog, the company said. Objects in it can be sorted by date added, by rating or viewed in random order.

According to Dmitry Grishin, Mail.Ru is focused on creating communication services based on the USG (usergeneratedconent): “We have already managed to take a leading position in the photo hosting site and set ourselves the task of achieving the same in the field of video.”
