Experts study the market for amateur content (user-generated content, UGC) in social networks and try to assess its growth rate.
In-Stat analysts predict that by 2010 such sites will grab a significant share of the advertising market:
over $ 850 million . At the same time, the number of video views and downloads on such sites will exceed 65 billion.
The total amount of amateur video by 2010 will exceed 9.1 petabytes, and the download volume will reach 1.1 exabytes. Some of this traffic will provide mobile devices. Currently, 23% of UGC sites support access from mobile phones, and the rest should provide it in the near future.
Social networks with UGC will use a variety of types of advertising, including contextual advertising, graphic banners, in-built videos and selling sections to brands on their websites.
At the moment, according to In-Stat, there are two leaders on the UGC market:
YouTube ranks first in the video sector, and
MySpace leads in total attendance.
