VTsIOM: 13% of Russians go for information on the Web

The All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center ( VTsIOM ) found out how often and for what purpose Russians use the Internet, as well as which sources of information they prefer in general.

It turned out that the majority of Russians - 85% - receive information from broadcasts of central television, and only 13% use the Internet for these purposes. The latter figure is comparable to the popularity of regional and regional radio (13% and 10%). The largest proportion of people who often turn to the Internet as a source of information, according to VTsIOM, live in Moscow and St. Petersburg - such 26%. In large and medium-sized cities, their share is reduced to 16–18%, and in small towns and villages, to 7–10%.

During the year Runet increased its audience by 3%. For comparison: the audience of central TV has grown from 76% to 85% - we are talking about people who meet their information needs. That is, those, for example, who are looking for entertainment in these communications, are not counted.

“Nevertheless, almost a quarter of Russians use the Internet today,” according to VTsIOM. “Of these, 5% use the resources of the global network every day, another 8% do it several times a week, 6% - several times a month, 4% - occasionally.”

More often than others, people with higher and incomplete higher education turn to online resources: 25% of them are online at least several times a week, 11% - several times a month, another 9% - at least once every six months. In this group, the minimum share of those who do not use the Internet in principle is 54%.

The opposite situation is observed among respondents with lower secondary education: only 4% of the representatives of this group go online at least several times a week, while 92% of them said that they do not use the World Wide Web at all.

77% of Internet users are needed to solve issues related to work or study. 44% read the news and use e-mail. Every fifth respondent on the Web communicates, watches movies or listens to music. They play - 11% of runetians.

Considering the Internet as one of the channels for receiving information, 44% of Russians consider it a powerful tool for receiving timely and reliable news. 27% have not figured out which sites to visit, and are wary of the Web as a whole.

43% of respondents find Internet convenient for communication - they believe that with its help people become closer to each other. 19% of respondents see in the “world wide web” only a toy and a fashion hobby.
