Sony BMG came to Runet with music

Yesterday, Western music traders merely looked at the Runet from afar, helplessly shook their fists and could not oppose anything to the local pirate expanse. Today, they are carefully stepping into our protected lands, and have already sent their first delegate, Sony BMG . In just a few months, the world major will start selling music from its extensive catalog in Runet.

Denis Komarovsky, managing director of Sony BMG’s Russian office, said that negotiations are currently underway with online music stores Janga !, Mp3.ru and AudioFind. With their successful outcome, the stores will get access to the Sony BMG archive and will sell music at a price of $ 0.5-0.6 per track, Kommersant reports. It is not yet known what the sales volume will be, moreover, it is not disclosed how the parties are going to divide the revenue. All that is known - the Russian Internet users will be offered 100 thousand music tracks and about 5 thousand video clips.

There are obvious explanations for the fact that a large western player is entering the Russian market right now. Firstly, on September 1, amendments to the law “On copyright and related rights” entered into force, introducing the Internet into the field of law, Denis Komarovsky explained. Secondly, legal online stores appear in the country. However, until now licensing agreements were concluded only with Russian right holders and independent foreign labels (for example, Orchard).

Experts pointed out some points that hinder the penetration of Western giants into the Russian online music market. “When distributing your Sony catalog, BMG will adhere to protected file formats, for example, vmi, which is less common in Russia than mp3,” says mp3.ru owner Sergey Zhukov. He added that Runet owners of stores will have to play by the rules of international copyright holders. The domestic resource is now trying to adapt the technical requirements of Sony BMG to Russian conditions, and this delays the launch of sales.

“Until now, the majors could not agree with any of the resources, and the main obstacles were the price, the content protection system and the limitation of distribution to the RU zone,” says Dmitry Ugrenovich, director of the National Association of Phonogram Manufacturers. However, in spite of this, there are predictions that others will follow after the “first swallow”.

Kommersant reports that EMI Gala-records and Universal Music are also negotiating sales on the RuNet. Market participants understand that legitimate sales through the Russian Internet depend directly on the consistency of their actions. “The legal service will be competitive if it has all the majors, not just Sony BMG and we, for example, because the consumer is interested in the widest possible offer on one site,” said Alexander Blinov, director general of EMI Gala-records.
