Sun Microsystems today unveiled the ninth version of its StarOffice office suite. The new version of StarOffice 9 adds support for the Mac OS X 10.5 operating system, as well as the Microsoft Office 2007 XML format. There are a lot of smaller updates in the package.
StarOffice 9 includes a word processor, spreadsheet editor, a tool for creating office presentations, as well as database software. Sun is positioning StarOffice 9 as a real alternative to Microsoft Office, which also has a significantly lower price. According to the company, the StarOffice user base exceeds 50 million people worldwide.
In StarOffice 9, the company has prepared many small extensions that enhance the functionality of the basic package, but they are not included in the basic package, since most extensions have a very narrow specialization. At the same time, in the presentation of StarOffice 9 at Sun they reported that they were working on an online version of the package that would run on Sun servers, and that it would be accessed remotely and by subscription. This option will compete with Google Dos, Microsoft Office Live and other similar office solutions.
The version presented today has received another important innovation - support for the Adobe PDF format. StarOffice 9 users can now edit and save PDFs. There is a standard extension that allows you to keep an online diary directly from the office suite.

Also for StarOffice 9, Sun prepared a new collection of templates and a system for creating reports based on information from various databases. The Lightning extension is not supplied in the basic version, which, despite this, deserves attention, as it allows to integrate StarOffice 9 and the Mozilla Thunderbird email client.
According to the manufacturer’s official data, StarOffice 9 has a total of more than 1,600 improvements over the eighth version. Among these improvements, you can highlight the new Start-Center, where users can start creating documents, working with mail or spreadsheets. StarOffice icon set has been updated. Many software improvements have been made to support large volumes of texts, spreadsheets or "heavy" presentations.
StarOffice 9 also received a new price list. The retail version of the package on disk and with support now costs $ 54.95, against $ 99.95 for StarOffice 8. A distribution downloaded from the Internet costs $ 34.95. Previously, the StarOffice download version cost 16.95, the price increase was due to the fact that the price of this option includes several calls to Sun technical support. Prices for business users remained unchanged: from 25 to 90, depending on the order quantity.
