Microsoft has released software for programming robots

Microsoft Corporation today released the final version of software designed to create software stuffing of robots and various robotic mechanisms - Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio 2008 (Microsoft RDS 2008). This set of software has actually grown from a pilot project that has been developed in the depths of the corporation for more than five years.

Microsoft RDS 2008 includes a special software model for creating asynchronous applications, as well as a set of visual and simulation tools that will be useful in the process of creating software for robots. Together with the set for Microsoft RDS 2008 comes a set of documentation and examples of source codes.

Microsoft RDS 2008 is the third large-scale release of Robotics Developer Studio. The corporation says that previous versions of this environment are used in a variety of research centers, universities and commercial companies. During the preparation of Microsoft RDS 2008, users downloaded over 250,000 copies, more than 60 companies applied for commercial use of RDS 2008.

Among the innovations that the environment has received, Microsoft highlights several:
')
First, in Microsoft RDS 2008, the code compilation system was revised, making the performance of final applications grow 1.5-3 times for managed code and 2 times for services. In addition, developers can now specify more specific program messages that link services, reduce network load, and optimize data processing.

Secondly, fundamental changes were made to the Visual Programming Language (VPL) tool. Now the intuitive language built into the application includes new methods for defining and configuring applications, which allows them to be deployed faster.

Third, useful additions have been made to the Visual Simulation Environment (VSE) tool. VSE now includes the ability to record and replay simulations. In addition, developers can conduct simulations in a variety of virtual environments - in a closed room, open space, or city. In addition, VSE was able to export from various CAD-programs, such as SolidWorks 3D.

In addition, the corporation said that the RDS 2008 system is fully compatible with Visual Studio 2005 and 2008.

The software is distributed in three versions: Standart Edition for professional developers, Academic Edition for educational institutions and Express Edition for individual developers. The cost of the first version is 500 dollars. The academic version is subject to special conditions for accounting institutions, and the Express Edition can be downloaded for free from the Microsoft website.
