The average podcast has 70 subscribers.

Feedburner, the largest RSS feed processing service on the Internet, is also used to publish podcasts. Interesting statistics were reported by the vice-president of the company Rick Klau (Rick Klau) in one of his interviews ( MP3 ).

Earlier this year, more than 1 million individual podcast subscriptions were registered on the Feedburner website. According to statistics, their number increases by 20-30% per month. The audience is growing, as the Americans say, "dramatically." As a result, by October 2006 the number of subscriptions had grown to 5 million, and the total number of podcasts to 71 thousand.

If we divide one digit by another, then we get the average number of listeners for one podcast. This is 5.000.000 / 71.000 = 70.42 people .

It should be noted that the total audience of each individual podcast may well be greater than the specified figure, because each podcast can be published on different platforms, so part of the audience will be taken into account in one accounting system, and some in another. But even in this case, the result is unlikely to be very different from the figure of 70 people.

It can be assumed that approximately the same statistics are observed on other podcaster platforms, including Russian ones. The average podcast audience does not exceed hundreds of people. Is it a lot or a little? It is hard to say. We do not even know what to compare with. If you compare with the audience of radio programs, then, probably, the popularity of podcasts is extremely small.

Vice-president of Feedburner, however, looks to the future with great optimism. Even now, an audience growth of 20-30% per month is impressive. But just imagine what will begin to happen when the seventh version of Internet Explorer comes out with the function of automatically downloading RSS feeds and file attachments, that is, with the built-in support for podcasts .

“Microsoft is going to“ socialize ”the idea of subscribing to content,” said Rick Klaw. About 80% of all users in the world (judging by browser statistics) will sharply get comfortable access to podcasts, and most of them - for the first time. In 2007, subscribing to RSS feeds and listening to podcasts can be as common for users as it is today - reading email.
