Networks for the smallest. Part oh, everything

My dear friends, brave critics, silent readers and secret admirers, SDTSM ends.

I can not boast that in 7 years I have touched all the topics of the network sphere or the fact that at least one of them has been fully revealed. But that was not the goal. And the purpose of this series of articles was to introduce the young student by the hand into this world and take him step by step through the main gallery, giving a general idea, and save Olifer and Olifer from painful wanderings through the dark corners of consciousness in trying to find the answer to the question apply it in life.
SDSM was planned with a short practical course “how to learn online in a month”, and resulted in 16 (actually 19) long issues, which we have even renamed to “Network For The Most Severe”. The total number of characters exceeded 1,000,000.

It would be correct to stop at BGP, but in MPLS it is not very successful to enter IP - I had to capture it. Perhaps it would be worth not to take on Traffic Engineering, but if I took up L2VPN, how to stop? Hardware architecture is an essential preface to QoS. A QoS so long demanded that about him it was impossible not to write. Exactly nothing to get rid of.
The last article was planning a certain collection of best practices (offer a nice-sounding synonym - and I will replace this tracing paper) on the design of the provisioning networks, but with time and experience it became clear that this is not only an immense layer of approaches, but also an excellent ground for verbal disputes. And why it is necessary to stop on providers? And communication operators? And data centers? A network of enterprises?
')
You can't say: do it right. It is impossible to teach an engineer to develop a design - he must grow to this himself, having made his way through his thorn bushes.

This is exactly what SDTSM offers - a barely perceptible path from easy to hard.

A lot of people had a hand, who had a head to write these articles:

Members ...
  • Max aka gluck is a co-author of the first articles and the author of the 4th part about STP and the IP SLA section in the 8th. Concurrently more than 5 years - admin project.
  • Natasha Samoilenko - additional materials, tasks and their solutions to many issues. As well as support that can not be overestimated
  • Dmitry aka JDima - critic and proofreader.
  • Alex Clipper is a critic and proofreader.
  • Dmitry Figol is a critic and proofreader.
  • Marat Babayan aka botmoglotx is the author of EVPN issues and photos for issue 14.
  • Andrey Glazkov aka glazgoo - critic and proofreader.

  • Anton Klochkov - the organizer. Thanks to him, the project has a lab environment, a broadcast server, and now its own podcast hosting.
  • Anton Avtushko is a website developer who faithfully serves for 6 years. Livstreet rested long ago, not a single plugin is supported anymore, and the site still lives. And for lookmeup.linkmeup.ru, stillborn, but with a good idea.
  • Timofey Kulin - admin and site developer.
  • Nikita Astashenko - site developer.
  • Nina Dolgopolova - illustrator. Logo and illustrations for the 9th and 10th editions.
  • Pavel Silkin - illustrator (0th and 1st edition).
  • Anastasia Metzler - illustrator (11th edition).
  • Daria Kormanova - illustrator (12th edition).
  • Artyom Chernobay - illustrator (13th, 14th and 15th editions and this final article).

The article about QoS was the last in the cycle. By the time it was completed, it became apparent how simple and incomplete the first issues were. Why are there the first ?! Up to BGP, everything is very bad.

In addition, readers often find errors themselves and offer corrections.

The idea of transferring all this to a gitbook, introduced by Natasha Samoylenko, looked so attractive that we did it:

Today there are most of the articles in current form.

Anyone can fork the project, make changes and make a pull request to the master. After I confirm it, the changes will appear in the gitbook.

Instruction for young contributors with burning eyes.

For now, I believe that there is no paper book on SDSM. While I am not ready to devote time to rewriting the first articles to get a complete, beautiful and, most importantly, comprehensive material about the network. Still, in this life there are a lot of interesting things, but with perfectionism I somehow can handle it.

Not the latest factor in the completion of a cycle and a shift in interests is the change of place of work.

And a short announcement: our hands are not for boredom, but for graphomania. Wait for a new series of articles. About automation.
