Free Vector Maps for GPS

Not so long ago, becoming the “administrator” of a usb-smart gps-receiver and Asus eeePC 901, I wondered about finding the right software for organizing a GPS-navigator based on the eeePC.

At the moment I have found two programs, more or less possessing the necessary functionality: gpsdrive and navit . I somehow did not really like the first one, and picking it with her was put off until later, but with the second soft I was picking more thoroughly.

Thanks to the creation of scripts, navit supports many different vector map formats (including garmin cards). But I was more interested in open and free sources.

As it turned out after a short reading of documentation, there is a project on the Internet that, on a wiki-like basis, is engaged in compiling a vector map of the world, ideally suited for use in various navigators - OpenStreetMap . The project, in my opinion, is very promising, and I would like to encourage all comers and interested to provide all possible assistance in detailing the maps.

You can edit maps either through the browser directly on the project site (you will need the Adobe Flash plugin), or through special offline programs. I chose for myself merkaartor , which, in fact , is shown in the screenshot (now I am “painting” my own neighborhood).
