Bluetooth is outdated yesterday, Wi-Fi is today

November never ceases to please new technologies. The system on a chip (SoC), built by Professor Jri Lee from National Taiwan University , has ten times smaller size and cost than existing analogues, but at the same time it is capable of providing a wireless transmission rate of two orders of magnitude more than Wi-Fi chips and 350 times more than 3.5G cellular networks

The SoC chip demonstration was recently held at NTU. The device equipped with such a chip can download a 4-gigabyte video in 10 seconds, while using the ADSL line for the same purpose will require one and a half hours of downloading, Wi-Fi connection - up to two hours, and Bluetooth - 4.5 hours altogether .

According to Professor Lee, the new chip can be used to instantly connect portable equipment anywhere in the home to a TV, stereo, video recorder and similar equipment. At airports and train stations, such a chip can download an entire movie to a mobile phone in a few seconds or instantly transfer thousands of photos from a digital camera to a computer.

According to developers, when mass-produced, the SoC chip can cost less than one dollar apiece.

NTU and Professor Lee are in the process of applying for a patent. Professor Lee started his academic career at NTU. He achieved the status of "expert in the field of wireless technologies" at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2003. His experience includes Cognet Microsystems in Los Angeles and Intel Corporation, where his work includes SONET OC-192 and OC-48 transceivers. Since 2004, he has been an assistant professor of electrical engineering at NTU and has spoken on various committees related to broadband data transmission, solid-state circuits, and other fields.
