Russia in the first place in the world for the use of IPv6

Two weeks ago, at the RIPE 57 conference, Google presented a report on how popular IPv6 usage is among end users. The results showed that among all computers, only 0.238% support IPv6. In this case, the most surprising was the distribution by country. The following is the percentage of end users with IPv6 support of the total number of users in a country:

• Ukraine - 0.64%
• Norway - 0.49%
• United States - 0.45%
• ...
• China - 0.24%
• Japan - 0.15%

Thus, the prevailing opinion that IPv6 is most popular in Asian countries where there is a shortage of IP addresses is nothing more than a myth.

According to the speakers, the reasons for the high rates of Russia and Ukraine are unknown to them. For France and the United States explanations are available. In France, one of the major providers distributes home routers with easily configurable IPv6. In the US, everything is explained by the great popularity of Apple computers, which widely use IPv6-to-IPv4 tunneling.

The study itself was conducted as follows. When sending a search request to www.google . *, The response, in addition to the search results, also contained a command to contact one of the IPv6 addresses owned by Google. For incoming IPv6 connections, the IPv4 and IPv6 addresses of the incoming address, the latency of the request, as well as the version of the browser and the operating system were saved. By IPv4, it was subsequently possible to determine the geographic location of the user.

The number of computers using IPv6 is growing at an average rate of a few thousandths of a day.
