Skype Mobile Delays Due To Technical Problems

Skype CEO Niklas Zennstrom said in an interview with the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat that most mobile users will have to wait until cheap international communications are available on their mobile phone.

The problems were more serious than originally thought. This is not only opposition from mobile operators, but also a delay in the release of new mobile phone models that support Skype.

Niklas Zennström said that his company was faced with "technical obstacles", trying to implement VoIP-telephony on standard mobile phones. The difficulties are so serious that now it’s impossible to even say approximately when major manufacturers, such as Nokia , will release the first models of phones with Skype support.

For two years now, Skype has been trying to port its program to mobile phones. This would bring a proprietary VoIP service to a new level of development. VoIP-telephony allows you to make calls about 10-100 times cheaper than the rates of cellular operators for international calls. According to the management of Skype, access to mobile phones is a key step that is needed to drastically increase the company's financial income, which is still small ( $ 44 million in the second quarter of 2006 ). For the current owner of Skype, eBay Corporation, access to mobile phones is a way to recoup the huge investments in the amount of $ 2.6 billion invested in Skype.

Despite several years of efforts, very modest results have been achieved in this direction. At the moment, the mobile version of Skype is only available on smartphones running Windows Mobile or Symbian. But only every tenth phone in the world is running one of these operating systems. This is not the result, which aims to Skype.

To achieve a wider distribution of its service, Skype needs to reach an agreement with mobile operators. But those do not have the slightest desire to give a competitor access to their subscribers. Cellular operators can easily block Skype traffic. Even if they do not do this, their data transmission infrastructure does not always provide acceptable quality of communication through Skype. As a result, hybrid services appear, such as iSkoot gates . These gates allow you to connect to the Skype network if you make an ordinary phone call using a special number within the network of the cellular operator, while the phone must have a special program installed.

At the same time, dozens of new start-ups began to operate, which are ready to intercept the primacy of Skype for the introduction of VoIP in the mobile market. One of the most promising American startups is Jajah . Another European startup is Rebtel . In the first case, to access VoIP, you need to access a special site and download a plug-in from a mobile phone, then Rebtel offers free or low-cost international communication on a mobile phone of any model without installing any kind of software (by creating virtual local numbers that are sent to by SMS).
