Web 2.0 has come to local networks

Irish Computer Society conducted a special study and found out how effectively large commercial companies use the capabilities of their corporate networks. It turned out that the overwhelming majority of them (80%) themselves admit that they do not use all the possibilities of the intranet as an internal communication tool. More than 200 Irish companies took part in the survey.

Ireland is one of the most computerized countries in Europe, so the results of this study are certainly applicable also to Russia, even to a greater extent. If in Ireland do not use the intranet at 100%, then what can we say about us.

The results of the study showed that the most popular tools that are used for internal communications in large companies are:

* electronic document management;
* e-learning courses;
* contact management.

The most popular file format is the Microsoft Office format. For full-text search on the web, corporate search engines Google (1st place) and Microsoft are most often used. The most common OS is Windows. Quite often, Oracle databases are used in conjunction with Microsoft servers.

Irish experts point out that corporate networks are increasingly using Web 2.0 technologies, such as blogs and wikis. Moreover, web applications are starting to be used here and there as an alternative to standard office applications. For example, this applies to webmail as an alternative to the standard Outlook program from MS Office.

As for the improvement of the intranet, there is a huge space for development: 86% of respondents said that they intend to increase the functionality of their local area networks in the near future.
