"Sovereign Runet" will negatively affect the development of IoT in Russia

Participants in the Internet of Things market believe that the sovereign RuNet bill may slow down the development of the Internet of things in the Internet. Such areas as “smart city”, transport, industrial and other sectors will be affected, as reported by Kommersant.

The bill itself was approved by the State Duma in the first reading on February 12. Representatives of companies that are engaged in the development of the Internet of things in Russia have made an official letter to the authors of the initiative. At present, the Association of Participants of the Internet of Things Market includes such operators as Rostelecom, MTS, ER-Telecom, MTT, etc.

The direct threat is that the project will increase the delay in the transmission of data packets for Internet of Things devices on core networks. First of all, we are talking about devices that are used in the systems of "smart cities", transport infrastructure and the industrial Internet.

The fact is that the bill points out the need to restrict access to prohibited resources by controlling the contents of the traffic with the help of special equipment on the networks of operators. “This may lead to technical failures and degradation of the quality of services, including for IoT devices, which may negatively affect the projects of smart cities,” said MTS representative Alexei Merkutov.

Other operators have reported agreement with this position. The fact is that the development of the Internet of things is moving towards applications that are critical to delays. These are unmanned vehicles, tactile Internet (transmission of tactile sensations with minimal delay) and others. And if you introduce additional elements in the communication system, it can reduce their technical efficiency.

“The development of technology is ahead of the reaction rate of regulators around the world, and the creation of additional barriers may adversely affect the provision of popular services of the Internet of things,” said Alexander Minov, general director of the National Research Institute of Technology and Communications.

Government representatives agree that the implementation of the norms of the law on the sovereign Internet should not affect the deterioration of communications in the Russian Federation.

In addition to delays in the transfer of data, the letter points out another drawback of the project - possible problems with the infrastructure of the domain name system (DNS), it is actively used in Internet of Things applications. Now the share of protocols that do not use traditional DNS servers is gradually increasing. In the next two to three years, the introduction of such developments by the largest technology companies, including Google, Microsoft, Apple and Facebook, is expected. New technologies suggest the development of, in fact, an alternative to the DNS infrastructure, its appearance is not provided for by the draft law. So the draft rules that relate to the DNS do not provide a guarantee in the event of the implementation of an external threat regime.
