Oculus announces Rift S, the new successor to Rift
Oculus today announced a new headset Rift S - the successor to the flagship Rift. Designed in collaboration with Lenovo, this headset features “inside out” tracking, slightly higher resolution and improved lenses.
Pricing starts at $ 399, and the headset is described as “evolution, not revolution,” co-founder of Oculus Nate Mitchell. Its design is completely new - largely inspired by the work that Lenovo has done with its Windows Mixed Reality headset - but enthusiasts will not like some changes. ')
As already mentioned, the screen resolution will change a bit; The original Rift used two PenTile OLED panels with a combined resolution of 2160x1200. The Rift S, on the other hand, uses one LCD panel with a resolution of 2560x1400, which is the same panel as the Oculus Go . However, the refresh rate is reduced from 90 Hz on the Rift to 80 Hz on the Rift S.
The Oculus Go also borrowed headphones - the Rift S has built-in middle-ear speakers in the strap - now with a hard “halo” design and plastic, very similar to the strap on a PlayStation VR headset. There is also no physical configuration for IPD, since Oculus decided to use software to solve this problem.
The Rift S will also be delivered with the same Oculus Touch controllers that will be supplied with Quest, with a tracking ring that is on top and not on the bottom, which makes the IR LEDs on the controllers visible to the headset's IR cameras for tracking.
In the end, the Rift S seems to be a product of compromise, based only on the desire of Oculus to remain in its niche. This was somewhat expected: the more ambitious headset “Rift 2” was canceled by Facebook several months ago , after which Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe announced his retirement. Ayribe led the development of virtual reality for Oculus.
Asgard's Wrath by Sanzaru Games, Stormland by Insomniac Games, and Vacation Simulator by Owlchemy Games - three games that Oculus announces for Rift S. Oculus also claims that a cross-game between Oculus Quest and Rift S. will be possible.
Oculus will release the Rift S at a price of $ 399, which is very different from * the starting * price of $ 599 for the original Rift headset. However, it’s only $ 50 more than the current Rift price. The Rift S will be available for purchase this spring.
Interestingly, Quest was also announced for $ 399 this spring , which means that Quest and Rift S will be launched at about the same time at the same price. At the same time, the Oculus Rift remains available for purchase through the Oculus Store and retail price partners, in contrast to Quest .
